It used to be that "doorway" pages sometimes
called "Gateway pages" were pages that focused
to very specifically at one topic and which didn't have
a lot of their own original content.
They were basically just "meta-refresh" pages
that just pointed to the main page of a web site, hence
the name the doorway.
For example say you have a page devoted dogs. You might
then create several doorway pages for several different
genres of dogs -- French poodles, colleagues, bull terriers,
German shepherds, etc..
Thes pages contain the terms and meta tags relevant for
each genre, but most of the text is a just copy of all the
other doorway pages and just points to the main page of
the site in question.
These type of doorway pages are specifically illegal and
could land you in a lot of hot water with Google and other
search engines as well.
However, this old-style of doorway pages are not to be
confused with the new and improved versions, which are not
only accepted, but encouraged in the Google index.
Today's doorway pages are much more sophisticated, and
actually contain relevant original content for each page.
True, it does take more time but using the example above
were at the then he each page having the same content but
a different title but the rewards are well worth it.
Today's doorway pages work like this:
Let's say you have a web page about dogs and you wish to
create a Gateway page or doorway
page for each breed.
Each page would contain detailed information specific to
that read and only that breed.
Each page would not only link to the main page, but to
every other doorway page you've created, thereby creating
a many Web of information with a general congruent theme.
This strategy can result in highly placed pages in Google
and almost every other search engine that uses a spider
to index potential new listings.
And speaking of the new generation of doorway pages...
There is a type of special page called a "Smart Page."
These special pages are designed specifically for Google
and use a combination of techniques that make them very
powerful and absolutely will drive your traffic way up.
The problem with them is that they are very difficult to
create, often taking up to an hour a page.
Now that doesn't seem that long until you realize that
you need to create a "smart page" for each of
your keyword phrases. Which means that you'd need to create
10, 20, 100 pages - all a an hour a piece!
However, there is a solution that we really
like that makes "Smart Page" creation a snap.
