Are you using hidden text on your web site? If you are
you are running the very real risk of having your web site
permanently excluded from Google and Yahoo!
Are you putting keywords or links in a web page that are
the same color as the pages background?
For example, putting white words on a white background
would make those pages contain extra keywords that are invisible
to the person reading the page, but visible to any search
engine spiders.
The goal to this amateurish strategy is simple. Back in
the old days (1997) when search engines were new, they were
very sophisticated and there were many methods of cheating
and designing your page so that you could easily get the
in top 10 positions.
However as technology advance and the economics of search
engine positioning became more and more important, search
engine companies worked hard to clean up their indexes.
Keywords stuffing -- or hidden text as it sometimes now
called was one of the most popular and prevalent methods
for boosting your search engine ranking and is now a big
no, no.
These days all it will get you is trouble. However, you'd
be surprised how many people still do it.
In fact, this is one of those little tricks that are Google
frowns upon severely and they will ban your web site from
the index if you get caught doing it.
In fact, if you're in a very competitive industry and several
of your competitors are fighting for the top spot in Google
and you're using hidden text, don't be surprised if your
web site is reported to Google Webmasters. (And don't think
for a second that your competition won't report you - they
will in a heart beat!)
It happens. I've seen sites go from the top two or three
placement to then vanishing from Goggle's index completely
in as little as 24 hours.
However, the flip side of the coin is that keywords stuffing
still works on some other search engines - but it's VERY
risky.
So the question is hidden text and keywords stuffing worth
the risk in your quest to get better search engine rankings?
No, not when you consider all the traffic you could lose
if you were banned.
One other thing, if Google bans your web site because you
did something stupid you can forget get ever getting that
domain name back into Goggle's index.
Remember the best way to get your site listed with Google
is to have well-designed HTML, build good fresh content
for your pages and keep it updated regularly, use proper
formatting for your meta tags, and exchange links with other
related web sites.
It won't happen overnight. Typically Google takes four
to eight weeks to add your site to their index but once
they do you'll find that they will spider your entire site
and you're Link popularity grows so will your rankings.
Best of luck, and see you at the top!
